Final Thoughts

One of the highlights of this trip has probably been to observe how people reacted when seeing our solar powered bikes for the first time. When we would overtake fellow touring cyclists (mostly on a hill due to all that heavy gear) you could observe the face expression from “what is that” to “ah, these are apparently solar panels” to “damn, I wish right now I would also have that assistance to go up this hill faster”.

The Last Stage

We only went up to Bosnia as there is a scenic trail from Trebinje to Mostar following shut down rail tracks. Our plan was to cycle along the coast road in Croatia but there we had to share the road with a lot of tourists and their RVs respectively. When we entered Bosnia the roads were quiet again and in general it felt much more calm. Hence it was an easy decision to change the route one last time by cycling through Bosnia as long as possible and then go up north-west towards Austria and Germany instead of the more southern sea route to Italy.

Breaking News

Melbourne security officers After disassembling and packing up our trailers for the third and final time we felt relived and went to the airport expecting flights with no bigger issues as we had brought our luggage trough security checks all over the world already. But the security at the Melbourne airport had a different idea. So far, we only had a problem due to the batteries in Fiji so we double checked the airline regulations before booking our flight.

A Massive Shortcut

In our last blog entry we were a bit stuck and in the tiniest of villages called Darlington Point. And yes we luckily made it the following day to the next village. A few days later we found our self in the proper outback. With a bit of imagination it was possible to see the curvature of the earth. There was absolutely nothing blocking the view, no hills, no trees, no farmland just a lot of nothing.

Restart

We left Sydney about 20 days later than planned. It took the border control that long to check our baggage. Even though they took everything apart, funny enough they didn’t complain (or find) an open package of nuts we accidentally left in our baggage, which is (to our understanding) considered as an illegal item. We got help assembling our bikes from friends Meanwhile in our hostel, we met a bunch of exchange students who were just about to start their exchange and haven’t found a room yet.

California Dreaming and a New Continent

Yosemite National Park When I wrote the last blog entry, I was sitting at the beach of Lake Tahoe with a cool beer in my hand. That was already quite a few weeks back and it is definitely time for an update. Yosemite National Park behind the famous El Capitan From Lake Tahoe, our route led us south through a part of Nevada, so we still got to experience how it is to ride in the desert (as could be expected, not too much to see besides sand and now and then a rattle snake).
